The world of Tales of Sbyr

No one remembers the cataclysm that destroyed the realm of Sbyr. It was a catastrophic event that, along with lives and places, took away History itself, leaving the survivors with a miserable life devoid of a past to tell and a future to believe in.

Yet, the cataclysm had a collateral effect: stories are now infused with magic and permeate everything in the realm. Living an adventure worthy of being told makes one stronger; the rusty weapons of ancient heroes endure more than a sword of steel forged by the finest blacksmith, and the most heartfelt declarations of love can make crowds fall at one's feet.

The culture of Sbyr has changed, following this new arcane paradigm: to the North, the Church of Parables has established a cult based on the cataclysm and ancient tales; to the South, the Academy of Verses educates hundreds of young individuals in the study of stories, to understand their power and harness it to control nature; and in the heart of Sbyr, in the capital, the Guild of Storytellers holds dominion. They have turned the "Tales" into a currency for purchases and trade.

Throughout the realm, adventurers, explorers, and tomb raiders travel in search of ancient Tales, within the ruins of the once mighty kingdom, facing great perils in the hope of rediscovering the lost History.

You are a group of wanderers, driven by curiosity, power, or the desire to give meaning to everything. Today marks the beginning of your adventure.

”Firimo raggiunse lo spiazzo nella boscaglia, accatastò i legnetti che con tanta cura aveva raccolto, ci si sedette accanto e iniziò a raccontare di quando un fulmine centrò una delle pecore del vecchio Tafario. Chiuse gli occhi, sospirò, e quando li riaprì la legna aveva preso ad ardere. Passarono le ore e arrivò un uomo, sporco di sangue. Chiese se poteva sedersi e Firimo acconsentì, con un cenno del capo. I due indugiarono con lo sguardo sulle fiamme per qualche istante, poi l’uomo prese parola e chiese a Firimo se vendesse degli unguenti, per curarsi le ferite. Firimo chiese, di ritorno, cos’era successo a quel poveretto e quando l’uomo finì di raccontare, Firimo gli porse degli unguenti e una piccola lettera, col sigillo in ceralacca spezzato e un dolce profumo d’agrumi. L’uomo pianse una lacrima, Firimo si alzò e si avviò per la foresta.”

Il mondo de I Racconti di Sbyr

Nessuno ha memoria del cataclisma che distrusse il regno di Sbyr. Fu un evento tanto catastrofico che insieme a vite e luoghi, portò via con sè la Storia stessa, lasciando ai sopravvissuti una vita misera, senza più un passato da raccontare e un futuro in cui credere.

Eppure, il cataclisma ebbe un effetto collaterale: le storie ora sono pregne di magia e pervadono tutto, nel regno: vivere un’avventura degna di essere raccontata rende più forti, le armi arrugginite di antichi eroi resistono più della spada d’acciaio forgiata dal migliore dei fabbri e le dichiarazioni d’amore più sentite fanno cadere folle ai propri piedi.

La cultura di Sbyr è mutata, seguendo questo nuovo paradigma arcano: a Nord, la Chiesa delle Parabole, ha fondato un culto basato sul cataclisma e sui racconti antichi; a Sud, l’Accademia dei Versi istruisce centinaia di giovani allo studio delle storie, per comprenderne il potere e sfruttarlo per controllare la natura; e al centro di Sbyr, nella capitale, comanda la Gilda dei cantastorie, che ha fatto dei “Racconti” una valuta, con cui poter fare acquisti e compravendite. In tutto il regno, avventurieri, esploratori, e tombaroli viaggiano, alla ricerca di Racconti antichi, nelle rovine del regno che fu, affrontando grandi pericoli nella speranza di rinvenire la Storia perduta.

Voi siete un gruppo di viandanti e, che sia per sete di scoperta, che sia per il potere, che sia per dare un senso a tutto, oggi ha inizio la vostra avventura.
